WordPress or a custom website: which should you choose?

This is usually presented as a technology argument. It is really a question about who maintains the site and how often the content changes.

Where WordPress wins

• Content teams who publish frequently and want a familiar editor
• Sites where the plugin ecosystem genuinely saves months of build time
• Lower initial build cost for standard requirements
• A large pool of developers, so you are not dependent on one vendor

Where custom development wins

• Performance-critical sites where every kilobyte matters
• Unusual functionality that no plugin fits properly
• Tighter security surface, because there is no public plugin ecosystem to exploit
• Full control over structure, output and integrations

The honest trade-offs

WordPress is not inherently slow or insecure. It becomes slow when twenty plugins each load their own assets, and it becomes insecure when nobody applies updates. Both are maintenance problems, not platform problems — but they are extremely common, so they are worth planning for.

Custom builds are not automatically better. They cost more upfront, they need a developer for structural changes, and if the build is undocumented you are more dependent on whoever wrote it. Ask about documentation and handover before you commit.

A simple way to decide

Choose WordPress if your team publishes content weekly, your requirements are well served by existing plugins, and you have a maintenance plan in place. Choose custom if your site is essentially a marketing surface that rarely changes structurally, performance is a competitive factor, or your functionality is genuinely unusual.

There is also a middle path worth knowing about: a headless setup, where content is managed in a CMS your team is comfortable with and the front-end is built custom for speed. It costs more than standard WordPress and less than a full custom application.
